Fox is launching a new reality show on May 21 called “Labor of Love,” the title of which is probably an accidental nod to the old VH1 dating.

FOX has announced that it is launching a new celebrity dating game show called The Choice , which is set to premiere this summer. The show, which will be hosted by model and So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley, will feature the world’s most eligible celebrities in a competition to find true love out of a group of fellow single people. The show’s twist is that the celebrities can’t see their prospective dates and, much like the singing show The Voice , the single celebrities will be sitting on rotating chairs with their backs turned to the contestants.

The rules hold that if the celebrity bachelor likes the information that a given contestant shares about their life, he pulls the “love handle” to swivel his chair around to bring him in visual contact with his prospective mate. After the bachelors makes their selections, a “Speed Choice” round occurs in which each woman has to make a quick case to convince the bachelor to bring them into the final round.

In the final round, host Cat Deeley will prompt the final two ladies with a challenge question after which the celebrities then make “the choice” as to which woman they will select to take on a dream date.

The month of May was like this even in TV’s usual, non-pandemic times. Once the season finales are over and the singing competitions have crowned their winners, networks often set their trash out on the curb, usually just before Memorial Day. Three new shows from Fox “Ultimate Tag,” “Labor of Love” and “Celebrity Watch Party” certainly have that late-spring stink about them – shows that are each mildly enjoyable in a fleeting way while also serving as a sort of omen about what lies at the bottom of most barrels.

Only one – “Celebrity Watch Party,” which premiered May 7 and airs Thursday nights – can be fully regarded as a product of the covid moment. Based on a British show called “Gogglebox” which was already copied as “The People’s Couch” on Bravo several years ago , it’s a show about watching people celebrities in this case sit on their couches at home and yell at the screen while they watch TV.

It’s hard to think of a show that would be easier to make, which is why Fox ordered 10 episodes last month as a fun, fizzy way to fill up some of the prime-time schedule while the network, like its competitors, rations out what’s left in its cupboards. The celebs are of course game, because all their other gigs dried up. The viewer’s reflexive response is of course despair: Has it really come to this, you ask – watching other people watch TV?

Luckily, critics and others already worked through this quandary, back when Bravo’s version premiered.

Teased during an ad which just ran on East Coast broadcasts of American Idol , The Choice at its heart is a celeb version of The Dating Game : Each episode will feature four well-known bachelors looking for love from a pool of civilian bachelorettes, and just as in the sixties show, the dudes will initially only be able to hear and not see potential dates. But just as on The Voice , more than one celeb can pick a contestant. If that happens, the celebs will try to woo the bachelorette and convince her to join his harem.

After each bachelor picks three would-be mates, the show moves on to a speed round, where the bachelor eliminates one more woman.

A dozen single Women wait anxiously in the Caribbean as a man a day arrives via helicopter – each man chooses which woman he would like to be “coupled ” with, until they are all paired up and the fun begins. Like “The Bachelor”, “Coupled” is a dating show that hopes to connect young men and women who are seriously interested in a long-term relationship. The show starts with 12 women in Anguila. They are living in bungalows on the beautiful island, waiting for some men to come visit.

When a helicopter flies overhead, the women wave excitedly, hoping their dream man may be on board. When the bachelor lands, they each get a few minutes to meet him, hoping for some chemistry, trying to make a good first impression. Then they vote with their feet, heading to a cabana if they are interested in the man, or back to the bungalows if they wish to pass. Afterwards, the man discovers at the cabana how many women are interested, if any.

Fox’s dark prince of reality TV, Mike Darnell , is dusting off a few of his old tricks. The network has ordered new summer dating game show The Choice , which uses spinning chairs reminiscent of NBC’s The Voice and applies it to romance — with celebrities thrown in for good measure. Four single celebrities to be announced later will sit in rotating chairs in front of a live studio audience, with their backs to a bunch of singles. The suitors can describe their life, their interests and their turn-ons — but the celebrities can only rely on their voice and their answers.

If the celebrity likes what he hears, he can pull his “love handle” — yes, Fox is really calling it that — and spin his chair around to see his potential mate face-to-face. In another caveat reminiscent of The Voice, if two celebs pull their love handle at the same time wait until the content crusader groups get a load of that , it’s the single who gets to choose which celebrity they want to hang with.

Tyson Beckford, Carmen Electra, DJ Pauly D and many more celebrity Fox’s upcoming celebrity dating show The Choice has lined up a list of famous.
